Unfortunately, Autumn was a victim of severe abuse. Please read this heart-wrenching account by Tammie Patterson: "I got a call about 2 Dal puppies that were dumped out in the country here in my town. When I went to get them there was only one left. It was the little girl. At first glance I saw a beautiful pup, that was very, very starved. The man told me that he had been trying to give them to someone but no one wanted them. He also told me he had been feeding them. We tried to catch the Dal but with no luck. She was extremely scared and would run if we were close to her. It was very dark and I couldn't tell a lot about her. In the morning I was horrified at what I saw. A tiny little pup that was about 3 months old and weighed less than 15 pounds. She was bloody with mange. She had terrible marks all over her. When I would take her to use the bathroom I knew something was very wrong. At the vet's he told me that he had never seen a dog so infested with worms. So we started her on her mange meds and got her on her wormer. Each day Autumn got better. She hated me for taking her, but she loved me for feeding her and even a little for petting her. When I reached into the crate she growled at me and I just had to pray she would not bite. She never did and we started to really get along. After she started getting better I saw a gorgeous Dal appearing. When I petted her I noticed that she had something rolling in her skin. Thinking it was cancer of something I took her to the vet. He told me that many people shoot dogs with BB's or even shot guns and this was just a few pellets." If this doesn't break your heart, nothing will. I (Dan) first learned of Autumn via a list serve on the internet. When I went to the webpage I learned more about Autumn - my heart was truly touched. I emailed the listing rescue organization, and then was put in touch with Tammie Patterson. With the help of Tammie, and Robbie Lark of DOTS (Dalmatian Overland Transport Service), a number of people worked together to get Autumn from Tennessee to Pennsylvania, a 1000 mile trek. Our thanks to the following people for making this possible:
Autumn made her way to the Poconos of Pennsylvania in early July, 2000. Her transition has been slow, but as of this writing (8/4/00), she has made a remarkable transition to a home with 4 other dogs. Angel, our other Dalmatian, has taken Autumn under her wing. They regularly play together, and spend LOTS of time sleeping side-by-side. So, Autumn has certainly found her Forever Home. Autumn is a testament to good people making wonderful things happen for animals in need. Folks, you have to understand that there are so many animals in this world that are bred and discarded. It is the responsibility of us humans to exercise responsible breeding, and to certainly spay and neuter our pets to avoid more pets suffering the tragic fate of Autumn - Autumn was lucky. If you would like to make a donation to help animals in need, you can do it indirectly by buying goods and services at one of our many stores at Peace of Mind Shopping Mall. All of your purchases generate commissions that are paid to help rescues animals, care for those in needs, and deter senseless breeding of animals.
