Unfortunately, many Dalmatians find their way to animal shelters due to the "101 Dalmatians" craze created by the Disney movie. Yes, they are adorable. Yes, they are neat to look at. And yes, they need of a lot of attention, exercise, and extra special diets. Their digestive tract cannot digest purines well, so they require extra special care; they are very susceptible to stones. They are also prone to a long, laundry list of skin allergies. Additionally, deafness is very prevalent in the breed. Once adopted, Angel slowly warmed up to the other dogs (Joshua and Toby at that time), and spent most of her time sleeping on Dan's lap. To this day she won't let Dan out of her sight unless she can help it. She is very loving, but she is also very selfish. This past Christmas (1999) all of the dogs were given packages of rawhide bones wrapped in Christmas paper. Angel let all of the dogs open their packages, and then proceeded to gather all of the bones and take them to her bed. If any of the dogs dare come to get a bone she would growl at them. Isn't that sweet? Angel is now full-grown, and at a petite 42 pounds, she is extremely small for her breed. For the most part she is healthy, but has had some skin problems that have required the special attention of a veterinary dermatologist. ...and Angel is extremely active. She can jump very high, about 6 feet, and has quick moves that any athlete would love to have. Her playful nature has caused Dan to be injured twice in his right eye by Angel. The second injury required ophthalmologic surgery to correct the corneal tears! So you can see, Dalmatians are NOT for everyone. However, Angel is "Dan's girl" and the apple of his eye.
